The primary duty of the Director of Affiliate Affairs is to manage and oversee the Affiliate Affairs unit including all the related budgets. The Director is responsible for conceptualizing, developing and facilitating the implementation of projects related to building the capacity of APHA and its Affiliates in alignment with APHA’s strategic plan. This staff provides support to expand communication and coordination with Affiliates in addition to helping APHA and Affiliate leaders develop and implement long- and short-range goals to increase the sustainability of our Affiliates and support the APHA strategic plan. In addition, the Director is responsible for managing and expanding Affiliate capacity-building initiatives, programs and technical assistance opportunities. The Affiliate Affairs unit is responsible for managing and overseeing National Public Health Week and the Get Ready campaign. Affiliate Affairs: Direct the Affiliate Affairs unit including the annual operating budget. Liaise with Affiliates on APHA advocacy priorities in coordination with government relations staff. Oversee affiliate affairs staff and relationship with APHA President. Foster networking and information sharing across state organizations to strengthen infrastructure and advocacy capacity. Oversee state association leaders/staff conference calls and meetings at APHA and APHA’s Annual Meeting & Expo. Serve as staff liaison to the Council of Affiliates. Plan and execute Affiliate programming throughout the year and at APHA’s Annual Meeting, including planning and facilitating Affiliate Day program. Communicate regularly with Affiliates through the Affiliate Online Community, e-mails, and newsletters. Foster effective working relationships among the Affiliates and with their organizational partners at the state level. Foster collaboration and effective working relationships between Affiliates and APHA staff and members. Affiliate Infrastructure Development: Manage national coordinating office for APHA state Affiliate initiatives.Oversee technical, programmatic and operational support for Affiliate grants.Identify and create revenue streams to support Affiliates, including grant opportunities for Affiliates and department.Oversight of existing grant projects and budgets.Develop technical assistance trainings to improve the Affiliates capacity. Travel to Affiliates to participate in education and training (when applicable). National Public Health Week (NPHW): Coordinate efforts with other APHA staff in theme development for implementation of National Public Health Week.Develop and manage annual operating budget for National Public Health Week.Direct overall fundraising efforts for NPHW. Lead efforts to identify expert speakers for NPHW activities. Write grant proposals, final grant reports, fact sheets, fundraising and partner letters, and communication materials for the website and for print pertaining to NPHW. Lead the internal NPHW planning meetings and yearly partner meetings. Work with the Affiliate Affairs unit to develop and disseminate NPHW materials. Maintain database files and records including those used to track contributions and maintain lists for NPHW. Work collaboratively within the department and with the Development Manager to research and evaluate prospective donors for NPHW. Promote NPHW to the general public and to traditional and non-traditional partners andsponsors. Get Ready program: Oversee program, including leading staff and interns in creating content for Get Ready –blog posts, fact sheets, graphic design, and other tools as needed.Lead Get Ready calendar production team each year.Hire and manage Get Ready interns in the summer.Coordinate annual Get Ready events, including Get Ready Day and Annual Meeting booth coverage. Management and other projects: Hire and manage Affiliate Affairs team, including Affiliate manager, Affiliate specialist, fellows and interns.Serve on Annual Meeting featured session work group and coordinate sessions andspeakers for key topics and sessions.Contribute to planning and execution of major projects and events at APHA, including the Policy Action Institute, public health authority grant events, strategic planning workgroups and APHA Your Way. Research new grant opportunities and apply as appropriate. Perform other duties as assigned. The position will supervise the Deputy Director, Affiliate Manager and the Affiliate Specialist positions.
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) and seven years of work experience in advocacy-related or health field doing grassroots organizing or affiliate support work. Strong management skills and experience with grant development, management and oversight. Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to gather data, analyze information and prepare reports. Proven flexibility and effectiveness in handling multiple projects under stringent timelines and with changing priorities. Effective interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteer leaders, vendors and staff. Familiarity with grant development and oversight. A firm commitment to the team approach and campaign or grassroots organizing experience preferred. Proficient in MS Office, Excel, online content management and database systems. Limited travel required.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hybrid work environment.
Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Monday - Friday (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
