The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R), the premier professional association for rehabilitation physicians, has an immediate opening for a Manager, Health Policy & State Legislative Affairs to join our team. We are working a hybrid schedule with at least 2 days in our Rosemont, IL office.
AAPM&R serves more than 9,000 board certified physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation (one of 24 ABMS certified board-certified medical specialties).
General Summary: Manages health policy and state advocacy initiatives for the Academy. Monitors and provides high-level analysis of state legislative proposals having an impact on physiatrists, their patients and their practices. Serves as staff liaison to the State Advocacy Committee and the Council of State PM&R Society Presidents. Serves as lead staff for ad hoc Workgroups or Task Forces focused on Academy priorities. Works closely with Health Policy and Legislation and Quality, Practice, Policy and Research Committees to maintain communication and vet key state advocacy issues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manages health policy and advocacy initiatives, including leading significant projects or advancing critical issues as needed.
Serves as Academy resource on state legislative and regulatory affairs and establishes annual priorities and formal vetting process to determine appropriate level of engagement on key state advocacy issues to ensure high member impact.
Serves as staff liaison to the State Advocacy Committee, which includes providing ongoing communication, planning conference calls, and meeting agendas, and drafting meeting minutes. Monitors state legislative and regulatory proposals, relevant to physiatrists and their patients. Drafts correspondence, position statements, and talking points and regularly provides relevant updates in The Physiatrist newsletter, Connections e-newsletter, and Reports to the Board
Serves as staff liaison to the Council of State PM&R Society Presidents, which includes providing ongoing communication, planning quarterly conference calls, and meeting agendas, and drafting meeting minutes.
Serves as staff liaison for the Quality, Practice, Policy and Research Committee’s Pain Management and Scope of Practice Workgroups. Manages Academy’s response to prioritized scope of practice and pain management/opioid legislative and regulatory issues.
Serves as lead staff for managing health policy-related position statements to include convening ad hoc workgroup(s), drafting new or revised statements, disseminating finalized statements, and managing the Academy’s ongoing review process for existing statements.
Represents the Academy at pertinent multi-specialty state advocacy conferences and briefings including AMA-convened meetings. Participates in relevant coalition work. Provides ongoing communication of key takeaways for members and staff team members.
Manages implementation of member alerts and surveys through the online grassroots advocacy/lobbying software system.
Facilitates information exchange between Academy members and responds to questions on Academy's health policy and practice activities, including position statements. Posts HPPS deliverables on Academy's Website and keeps advocacy pages up to date.
Manages relevant budgets including resources for committees, projects and conferences.
Performs other duties related to the Quality, Practice, Policy and Research Committee including supporting agenda preparation, meeting logistics, and drafting meeting minutes as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Reimbursement and Regulatory Affairs.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Detailed understanding of healthy policy and state legislative processes.
Exceptional customer service skills, including the ability to respond to Academy members, internal staff and others in a professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous
Strong critical thinking and analytical skills and the ability to organize, prioritize and direct multiple projects within deadlines.

Self-motivated with proven interpersonal and team skills, including the ability to work productively with physicians and colleagues from other organizations. Maintains high professional standards of integrity, ethics, and commitment to the goals of AAPM&R.
Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet navigation. Knowledge of association management processes and iMIS database system a plus.
Written and spoken fluency in English
Education and Experience:
Relevant Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred).
Three or more years monitoring state legislation or related experience is
