
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Seven (7) years of full-time related experience to include experience negotiating contracts. Supervisory experience. Experience developing and executing community relations plans that create a positive impact. Skilled communicator, with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of people.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in communications, public relations, journalism or related field. Experience in marketing, community relations or public relations. Experience in a higher education environment and/or hospital setting.
Brief Description of Duties:
The AVP of Community Relations is responsible for conceptualizing and implementing an overall strategic community relations plan for Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine. Responsibilities include developing initiatives and opportunities to raise local and regional awareness of Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine, and developing and managing partnerships and sponsorships with community agencies and organizations. Responsibilities also include oversight and direction of the content of the Community Relations website and researching and writing content for University/Hospital owned media including website, publications, and social media. In this leadership role, the incumbent will directly supervise professional level staff as well as interns. Position reports to the Senior Vice President for Government and Community Relations and functions in Leadership capacity when the SVP for Government and Community Relations is unavailable or has responsibilities delegated. Incumbent must possess excellent verbal and written presentation skills as well as outstanding organizational skills.
- Research, develop, and implement Community Relations strategic plans and policies to enhance programs and events designed to strengthen community relationships and increase awareness of Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine. This strategic plan is comprehensive and spans across the local and regional communities. Incumbent works closely with executives, departments and service areas to develop comprehensive programming and lead actual events. Incumbent participates in essential decision-making processes that result in policy proposals, selects from among options, and is key stakeholder in the decision to implement policies.
- Serve as the University's representative to local business groups, civic organizations, agencies, and neighbors. Meet regularly with these different groups to understand concerns and ideas. In consultation with Sr. VP and AVP of Government Relations, evaluate and advise on any action needed. Incumbent has implied authority to speak on behalf of the Senior Vice President for Government and Community Relations on matters appropriate related matters concerning the local community. Promote the University and Hospital goals while balancing the needs of the community. Chairs related committee meetings.
- Develop and maintain communications to the community and community organizations by using a variety of marketing channels. This includes through use of staff and interns, developing and managing a dedicated Community Relations website with frequent updates, writing stories for Stony Brook- owned media, using social media to repurpose messaging, and developing a community database to share more extensive information and materials.
- Serve as team member for managing sensitive and confidential issues related to campus, clinical, and hospital projects that impact the greater community. Serve as liaison between campus, clinical, and hospital departments and community groups. Make recommendations for communication plan for sharing sensitive and confidential information with appropriate constituents.
- Supervise the Director of Community Relations and interns, and is responsible for hiring and employment related decisions for the area of community relations.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
