The Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing communications and related strategies that elevate the OHSU School of Dentistry as a leader in dental care, research and education; and supporting engagement of faculty, students, residents, alumni and other key audiences.
This individual plans, executes and sustains effective multi-dimensional communications efforts that help to achieve School of Dentistry goals and is responsible for the school's day-to-day communications function. The position provides communications counsel and support to the Dean and senior leaders on a broad array of issues affecting employee and student life, including speech writing, opinion pieces and presentations.
With a dedicated focus on the dental school, this individual works in concert with other communications professionals across OHSU's employee communications, media relations, social media, brand strategy and marketing, government relations and events functions; the Alumni Council; the OHSU Foundation; among others.
Function/Duties of Position
Based on goals and strategic initiatives articulated by School of Dentistry and OHSU leadership, and in collaboration with the School of Dentistry digital communications specialist, oversees the development and implementation of an internal and external communications plan for the School of Dentistry, to include newsletters, website, digital communication, social media, and print marketing collateral, ensuring materials align with the OHSU brand standards.
Serves as communications counsel to deans, chairs, and the chief operating officer.
Routinely meets with school leaders to keep up-to-date on key initiatives and opportunities to enhance the school's reputation internally and externally, and coordinates communications among School of Dentistry departments, clinics, continuing dental education, and the OHSU Foundation to provide a unified voice for the school and its members.
Successfully supports the alignment of the School of Dentistry communication efforts with OHSU's larger strategic vision.
Communication Content Development
Writes, designs, edits, and distributes high-quality communications to engage and celebrate faculty, staff and students; ensures news, leadership messages and strategic information are conveyed across the school with consistency and efficiency
Ensures communication efforts effectively reach School of Dentistry customers and stakeholders, utilizing appropriate tools and platforms, including the School of Dentistry website, in collaboration with the SD digital communications specialist; and, OHSU social media platforms, OHSU Now and OHSU News, in collaboration with Strategic Communications.
Develops urgent communications in response to external and internal events; determining scope, timing and content of messaging.
As requested, prepares communications on behalf of the Dean of the School of Dentistry, including writing talking points for events, presentations and meetings; and, provides editorial support for communications from the Dean.
Provides support for communication- and promotion-related materials at internal/external events, as needed.
Assist the OHSU Foundation in its communications with alumni, advocacy associations, donors, community groups, industry and academic partners, and other stakeholders able to impact the success of the dental school.
Partnerships and Outreach
Partners with OHSU Strategic Communications, Government Relations, Brand Strategy and Marketing and the OHSU Foundation to align School of Dentistry communications. Attends communications meetings, offers input and feedback as the dental school's representative, and helps to implement initiatives and disseminate OHSU information on behalf of those groups.
Works with the Dean, OHSU Foundation, Alumni Association, and Government Relations to facilitate external communications about alumni events and announcements.
Collaborates with School of Dentistry departments and committees for special events, VIP visits, and celebrations planning and implementation, as needed.
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree Communications, Marketing or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum 5 years' professional communications experience
Demonstrated project management skills
Comfortable working with senior executives, chairs and faculty
Strong consensus-building skills
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage people with diverse skill sets
Ability to work in highly matrixed work environment

Master's degree in Communications, Marketing or related field
Experience in large, complex academic, government, healthcare and/or non-profit organizations.
Demonstrated knowledge of issues of importance to dentistry
