Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit, unified adult cancer care and research center that is clinically integrated with UW Medicine, a world leader in clinical care, research and learning. The Policy Advisor, Government Relations will research, plan, and assist in the development of legislative and regulatory initiatives of interest to Fred Hutch to increase local, state, and national support of our mission. Key functional areas of responsibility include analysis of local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory proposals related to relevant public policy issues.
Responsibilities
- Continually monitor the local, state, and federal landscape for legislative and regulatory opportunities and threats.
- Analyze potential impacts of local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory proposals related to relevant public policy issues.
- Assist in setting the public policy and advocacy agenda for Fred Hutch, working collaboratively with Fred Hutch leadership and departmental employed and contract staff.
- Draft reports, statements, memoranda, position papers, regulatory comment letters and other written materials on relevant public policy issues.
- Draft statements and talking points for Fred Hutch leadership on relevant public policy issues.
- Develop strategies that both influence regulatory policy and legislation and take advantage of opportunities that will enhance the image and reputation of Fred Hutch among key policy makers and opinion leaders.
- Establish, develop, maintain, and enhance strong and trusted external relationships with individuals and organizations necessary to accomplish Fred Hutch's short and long-term public affairs goals, including:
- Local, state, and federal elected officials and agency leadership, policy makers and key staff.
- Peer government, community, and external relations leaders within the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Cancer Consortium, and with key for-profit and not-for profit organizations.
- Other hospitals, cancer centers and cancer center organizations.
- Provide strategic counsel to third parties on policy issues of concern to Fred Hutch and participate as a leader in key coalitions and organizations where critical to advance Fred Hutch's public policy agenda.
- Serve as a spokesperson, represent Fred Hutch leadership, and speak credibly, accurately, and authoritatively on behalf of Fred Hutch leadership in briefings, at hearings, in strategy sessions with legislative allies, and in all other settings as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree; advance degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years in government relations and public policy roles at all levels of government, with demonstrated record of achieving favorable legislative and regulatory outcomes.
- Politically savvy, proactive leader with established, positive relationships at the local and state level, in Washington State; experience with federal and state policymaking, legislative and regulatory matters strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated interest in serving diverse communities.
In addition to job duties at Fred Hutch, this position also requires access to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which requires COVID-19 vaccination without exceptions.Accordingly, as a condition of employment for this Fred Hutch position, newly hired employees must provide proof of vaccination before their first day of employment.
