ABOUT THE ROLE:
The development manager’s primary responsibility is fundraising for the NCSL Foundation. The Foundation currently has over 230 sponsors at four different levels of giving. The development manager works with all sponsors to ensure benefits are implemented and sponsors are engaged with the organization. The development manager also works to recruit new sponsors with a goal of 30 sponsors each fiscal year. This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills, a high-level of organization and a strong commitment to customer service.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Helps develop and carry out fundraising plans for both the renewal of existing Foundation sponsors and the prospecting for new outside sponsors to achieve the ambitious NCSL Foundation fundraising goal.
- Collaboratively develops and maintains relationships with existing donors and new funding sources to promote NCSL’s work.
- Routinely required to navigate situations which are politically sensitive and critically important to maintain the organization’s strong reputation.
- Collaborates with NCSL and Foundation staff to develop potential projects and public-private partnerships for Foundation funding.
- Acts as liaison on behalf of Foundation donors with NCSL staff.
- Staffs Foundation board of directors meetings, other policy meetings and national meetings on behalf of NCSL Foundation.
- Travels on average 1x/month for meetings and fundraising events.
SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
THE WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position is a mostly performed in an office environment, on or off-site, with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Team members utilize standard office equipment such as copy machines, laptops, printers, scanners, and smartphones. Expand your horizons with travel opportunities to network with lawmakers and staff across the country (includes overnights and weekends by airplane). QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
- Bachelor’s degree required plus six years of relevant and progressive work experience in the nonprofit, institutional foundation, or government affairs sector with at least three years of direct fundraising responsibility.
- Excellent people and relationship-building skills. Ability to function as both a member and leader on the team. Ability to develop a strong and trustworthy relationship internally and externally.
- Highly adept at working in a politically neutral manner and dealing with politically sensitive constituencies, including legislators, legislative staff and private sector executives.
- Exceptional communication, research and analytic and organizational skills.
- Substantial knowledge and technical expertise in development and fundraising fields.
- Ability to maintain a flexible schedule including working extended hours possibly on nights and weekends. Willingness to travel approximately 1/month.
- Desire to work in a small team setting with high achieving individuals.
- Must be Washington, DC, Maryland or Virginia resident or willing to relocate
