POSITION SUMMARYThe Marketing Communications team at the University of California's systemwide headquarters is seeking an energetic, experienced social media manager to engage our followers and help build their personal connections to UC.
In this position, you'll make and post shareable content across the University of California brand social media channels with creativity and gusto. You'll decide how to foster active relationships with varied audiences, closely tracking which strategies work best with whom. You'll form close partnerships with our creative and editorial teams to build our social outlets into ones that are known for content that delights and informs. The successful candidate will have an expert command of best practices and trends in social media marketing and a strong track record of leading creative campaigns to build active social communities. You will be a deft hand at creating shareable content, meticulously executed, and a critical thinker who is eager to experiment and measure the return on each effort. Your ideas on leveraging the latest shifts in the social media landscape to enrich our brand will support the broader team's efforts to raise awareness about the value and contributions of California's public research university. This position works within Marketing Communications, in the division of External Relations, and reports to the Director of Integrated Marketing. Our office, based in downtown Oakland, offers a family friendly environment, excellent benefits, and a competitive salary. This position has the option to either be hybrid, with two or three days in the office, or full-time in the office, based on the candidate's preference (and subject to change based on divisional preferences).
Responsibilities

Act as the on-brand voice of the University of California through daily management, execution and moderation of the system's core social media channels (may include occasional nights and weekends). Run social campaigns and track the success of their defined objectives. Listen to, and possibly engage in, relevant social discussions and report learnings to leadership, when appropriate. Deploy key analytic tools to measure effectiveness of social efforts and adjust course as needed.

Research, develop and produce social media content, drawing on close working partnerships with in-house creative and editorial teams. Liaise with key organizational partners, for example government relations, media relations and admissions, to represent key institutional messages in ways that are impactful and shareable. Determine optimal presentation, tone, and creative for each platform. Plan and optimize a social media calendar that supports and enhances the overall editorial planning of the department.

Develop and implement social media strategies for marketing and communications campaigns across relevant platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok. Continuously evaluate ongoing long-term social media strategy and refresh and pivot as needed. Consult with Marketing Communications leadership to ensure strategies meet broader organizational needs and messaging priorities. Develop partnerships with high profile social media accounts and subject matter experts to increase social lift of content.

Cultivate strong working relationships and communication channels with campus social media leads. Communicate campaigns and priorities across UC for optimal lift. Facilitate systemwide meetings and workshops to skill share. Develop best practice policies and guidelines to provide to other social media users across the system. Serve as expertise and a resource to colleagues.

Maintain currency with emerging social media technologies and trends. Explore new social networks to reach target audiences and recommend improvements in how social media platforms are used, adopted, launched and maintained.
Required Qualifications
- Understanding of integrated, multi-channel social media in support of an organization.
- Knowledge of the essentials of social media strategy and execution.
- Copywriting and content-creation skills, with the ability to adapt style, tone, and voice to varied content types and audiences, while staying on-brand and on-message. Knowledge of AP Style preferred.
- At least five years of experience directing or managing social media channels with a strong understanding of each outlet and their best practices or equivalent experience creating and optimizing content desired.
- Demonstrated experience devising and executing social campaigns, with accompanying project management skills to complete projects under tight time and budget constraints.
- Excellent communicator and creative thinker, with an ability to use both data and intuition to inform decisions. A strong grasp of how digital communication can effectively convey and advance messages to various audiences.
- Strong familiarity with using social media management tools. Familiarity with Sprout Social a plus.
- A drive for measuring success and using analytics to optimize strategies accordingly.
- Strong collaborative and relationship-development skills in working across creative and editorial teams and with the public.
- Politically astute and skilled in anticipating institutional concerns and coming up with workable solutions.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Familiarity with greater marketing and public relations principles and how social media can enhance those efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Fluency in handling visual/multimedia content; facility in design, photo editing or video editing (Canva, Photoshop, etc.).
- Familiarity with paid social posts and campaigns.
