The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA), a national association serving nurses and other healthcare professionals working in palliative and hospice care, is seeking an experienced Health Policy Specialist. The Health Policy Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of advocacy and public policy strategies in support of the overall mission of HPNA. This position will actively monitor and analyze legislation, regulations and political developments, both at the federal and state levels. The Health Policy Specialist will also work with the enterprise’s lobbying firm to implement a robust advocacy agenda. Responsibilities for this role include the following:
Coordinating HPNA’s grassroots advocacy program (State Ambassadors) to maximize member engagement in public policy activities and initiatives.
Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy to educate volunteer leaders and members on public policy related issues, activities and resources available through the national office.
Establish and successfully manage relationships with outside stakeholders and strategic partners.
Represent the national organization within healthcare and industry coalitions, task forces, committees, and governmental work groups.
Participate in regular communication and planning discussions with the organization’s legislative firm.
Bachelor's degree, advanced degree or additional certifications are preferred
but not required.
Five to seven years of experience with federal or state legislatures, federal or state executive or agency branch, government relations office, or advocacy work within a trade association, campaign, grassroots firm or other organization.
Nursing, medical, or healthcare industry experience is preferred.
Detailed knowledge of the legislative, regulatory, judicial process, and understanding of related issues and laws is required.
Experience and knowledge in all aspects of CQ Engage, Voter Voice, or similar grassroots software programs.
Excellent written and verbal communications with the ability to effectively address all levels of personnel within and outside of the organization, including giving public presentations.
Strong reading comprehension, grammar skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team setting.
Proficient with relevant technology applications such as web design and content management systems, database applications, email marketing applications, social media platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite.
