As an organizational unit under Academic Affairs at UC San Diego, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is considered a leader in data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure, providing resources, services, and expertise to the national research community, including industry and academia. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of computer-based resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT. SDSC launched Comet, a petascale supercomputer and will soon install Expanse. SDSC is a partner in XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment), the most advanced collection of integrated digital resources and services in the world.
Reporting to the Director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), the Director of External Relations works in close collaboration with the SDSC Executive Team, SDSC Executive Committee, and UCSD External Relations entities responsible for communications, media relations, government relations, industry relations, marketing and development, and coordinate with Campus Advancement to identify potential SDSC programs and potential partnerships with other campus departments.
Manages media relations operations and activities for SDSC, including strategic planning and program management, as well as staff supervision. May be responsible for budget, personnel development and administration. Responsible for providing oversight and leadership in planning, managing and implementing a broad range of programs and initiatives including: communications/media relations, marketing, and creative efforts for SDSC. Oversees the design of a comprehensive set of strategic External Relations approaches aimed at external and internal public relations, media relations and marketing opportunities for SDSC.
Oversee a comprehensive communications program at SDSC that includes media coverage, the promotion of graphical identity via science and engineering publications, web publications (external and internal), social media postings, targeted newsletters, brochures, and memorabilia. Ensure that SDSC's communication strategy is well coordinated with UCSD Communications and UCOP, and well integrated with UCSD partner organizations such as the Jacobs School of Engineering, the Halicioglu Data Science Institute, Social Sciences, Qualcomm Institute, and other campus colleges, schools, and departments. Provides effective administration and supervision to the External Relations Division staff, including hiring and directing staff, allocating and monitoring budget resources, maintaining and updating all data related to External Relations achievements.
Proven skills in science writing for general audiences, particularly in an academic/research setting or a national publication.
Strong experience in writing for a variety of formats including press releases, feature articles for newspapers/magazines, brochures, newsletters, speeches, scripts, website and other electronic media.
Demonstrated experience in writing case statements or funding proposals from agencies such as the NSF and NIH, as well as private sponsors in collaboration with Campus Advancement.
Thorough ability to understand complex scientific concepts and translate those concepts for the general public.
Demonstrated experience developing and writing for social media platforms.
Proven ability in science writing in the area of computing, high performance computing, and data science.
