ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY: Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on a scenic waterfront site in Vallejo, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students. The campus currently offers undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Global and Maritime Studies, and Business Administration. A master's degree in Transportation and Engineering Management is offered as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
Position Summary: University Advancement manages the fundraising efforts on behalf of the California State University Maritime Academy that includes soliciting individuals, corporations, foundations and professional associations. Advancement is also responsible for public affairs, strategic communications, alumni relations and government relations.
Under the direction of the Vice President for University Advancement (VPUA), the Director of Marine Development will be responsible for managing the California Maritime Academy Foundation's (CMAF) vessel donation program. Working within the guidelines of the prospect management program, this includes the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospective donors and building a national network of boat brokers that are familiar with the CMAF vessel donation program.
Provide leadership and management of a marine development program that identifies, cultivates, and solicits vessel donors.
Responsible for working with staff and volunteers to secure a minimum of 10 vessel donations annually with a book value of $1.5M.
Conduct a monthly minimum of 20 face-to-face visits with boat brokers, yacht club leaders and boat donation prospects to advance the marine development program with donations and charter opportunities.
Manage all CMAF vessel maintenance, donation title transfers, and prepare IRS documents.
Conduct sea trials and the relocation of vessels as needed.
Responsible for creating, writing, design and production of all solicitation and collateral materials.
Work collaboratively with the California Maritime Academy Foundation's Marine Development Committee. This includes staffing all monthly committee meetings including the development of agendas and recording of all meeting minutes.
Maintain weekly contact with Marine Development Committee volunteers.
Work collaboratively with Advancement Communications staff to maintain a web presence for promoting vessel donations and listing of vessels available for charter or sale.
Maintain proficiency in all applicable IRS and other federal and state laws governing vessel donations.
Prepare board reports and written correspondence with donors and charterers
Work collaboratively with the Cal Maritime Advancement team to represent the University at special events and activities including but not limited to alumni, development, recruitment, and athletic events.
Work with Advancement support staff to ensure timely payment of all marine development invoices
Ensure that all boats are currently registered with USCG or DMV.
Ensure that each vessel is currently insured.
Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the Raisers Edge fundraising software to document and report marine development prospect and donor activities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
USCG license to operate up to 100-ton vessels.
Valid driver's license
CPR & First Aid certified or ability to become certified within 120 days of employment
Demonstrated knowledge of marine vessels, the maritime community and vessel acquisitions and sales.
Ability to safely operate sailing and motor vessels in open water.
Ability to operate motor vehicles including the towing of boat or support trailers
Ability to travel frequently.
Demonstrated experience in soliciting donations of vessels and gifts.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and work with volunteers and potential donors.
Demonstrated ability to articulate the missions of the Academy and CMAF.
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including both written and oral communication skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's or advanced degree.
Familiarity with yacht clubs and vessel brokers.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; involves lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits. On the job, the employee is exposed to marked changes in temperature and/or humidity and drives motorized equipment. EQUIPMENT, MACHINERY, TOOLS OR MOTOR VEHICLES USED:

Operate motor vehicles including towing boat or support trailers HOURS OF WORK/TRAVEL: Some travel and travel outside of business hours. BACKGROUND CHECK: A background check (including a criminal record check and DMV records check) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
DESIGNATED POSITION: This position is a designated position in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
