Position Summary: Working in the External Relations and Communications Division, ERC, the Executive Director Media Relations & Press Secretary directs media strategy for systemwide UC initiatives and campaigns, while managing major issues; drafts and edits a range of strategic communications documents for the President and other senior leaders, including public remarks and articles. This role serves as a senior advisor to the President on strategic messaging and public appearances with media; manages and implements community engagement and special projects on behalf of the President in partnership with other units in ERC, including outreach to potential advocates and allies; and coordinates outreach to external audiences including foundation, civic and business leaders.
Reporting to the AVP Communications, Marketing and Media Relations, the Executive Director Media Relations & Press Secretary drafts and edits media statements, letters to the editor, and op-eds for the President. Serves as a primary spokesperson and media strategist for the President, and as one of the primary spokespeople for the organization. Develops media messaging and works in partnership with Marketing Communications, Executive Communications, Government Relations, Legislative Analysis and other areas across the Office of the President. The Executive Director sets short- and long-term department goals, manages staff, oversees proactive pitching for positive UC narratives and placements in national and local media.
The Executive Director Media Relations & Press Secretary travels with the President or coordinates the staffing of her by others, and schedules, coordinates, and as necessary, staffs media interviews of the President. The Executive Director Media Relations & Press Secretary also reviews and approves written materials from a strategic perspective to maximize strategic impact and minimize risk.

Duty 1: Under the direction of the AVP Communications, Marketing and Media Relations, develops proactive media strategies and outreach to support the overall promotional goals of the University of California including media remarks, talking points, formal responses and statements for the President, Regents, Chair and other senior leaders, including remarks for community engagement activities, meetings of the Board of Regents and campus appearances. Drafts or edits opinion pieces for the President, primarily op-eds based on speeches or strategic writing projects. Drafts and edits media statements, letters to the editor and news releases featuring the President or Regent's Chair. Maintains strict confidentiality. Duty 2: Serves as a spokesperson and media strategist for the President and other University leaders. Serves as a primary spokesperson and manages ongoing issues and UC's responses. Works proactively with UC leadership to analyze and address external and internal issues which impact UC operations and external relations. Function:Press Secretary Percent: 40
Duty 3: Works with Executive Communications on community engagement and special projects on behalf of the President, including outreach to potential advocates and allies. Works on strategic writing projects for the President; travels with the President, or coordinates the staffing of her by members of the Executive Communications team. Coordinates and participates in outreach to influential civic and business leaders, foundation executives and others. Function:Public Engagement Percent: 20
Job Requirements Bachelor's degree in related area and / or ten years equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of the concepts, principles and technical aspects of media communications, including in-depth understanding of print, broadcast and online media.
Thorough knowledge of principles and practices in crisis and emergency communications.
Excellent written communication skills, including editing, and verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent skills in conceiving and implementing media relations plans and strategies with media relations team(s) and providing leadership to colleagues in academic and administrative units across the location.
Expert knowledge in a specialty area such as broadcast news including TV/radio, internet, social media and other emerging technologies.
Supervisory skills and management acumen to oversee media relations specialists and direct work. Required Excellent skill to establish an environment of and maintain strict confidentiality.
