Berkeley Lab's Computing Sciences Area is seeking a Science & Technology Writer/Editor.
The Computing Sciences Area at Berkeley Lab is looking for an experienced, creative and strategic writer to join its communications team. Working in a fast-paced, competitive research community, Computing Sciences researchers and engineers help drive scientific discovery by providing scientists with one of the world's leading supercomputing centers, the world's fastest scientific network and advanced technologies developed by internationally recognized leaders in applied mathematics, computer science, data science and scientific computing.
We seek a communications professional with experience in communicating scientific and technical accomplishments to a broad audience and who has demonstrated a strategic and creative approach to communications using traditional and digital media. The communications group supports three divisions and the area management, comprising a total of 300+ employees, working directly with staff at all levels. The group also supports and provides content for four websites within the CS Area, including an area website, one for the Computational Research Division, as well asone for each of the national user facilities located at Berkeley Lab: the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet).
What you will do:
Identify and write news and feature stories within the Computing Sciences Area at Berkeley Lab, including: Computational Research Division, NERSC, and ESnet. Create and deliver timely information to a variety of audiences, including the Computing Sciences Area staff, Berkeley Lab employees, Government Relations Staff, the U.S. Department of Energy, the broader scientific community and general public. This includes content about research results, accomplishments, annual reports, presentations, collateral, and messages from leadership.
Work with the Computing Sciences Area Directors and other communications staff to ensure stories are aligned with the achievement of strategic objectives.
Work with Department of Energy and Berkeley Lab communications staff to promote stories to journalists and on social media.
Develop and execute a social media strategy for delivering research results and accomplishments. This includes strategically building an audience of Department of Energy staff, research institutions, government officials, media, vendors, as well as HPC, Computational Science and Networking researchers.
Create a Computing Sciences Area monthly newsletter that includes high visibility highlights with DOE program managers, Computing Sciences Area staff, Berkeley Lab Directorate, etc.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, corporate communications, English or a technical/related field, or equivalent experience.
At least 8 years of experience in technical and non-technical writing and/or editing in news/magazine/publications/online communications.
Advanced science writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, story research and concept development skills for clearly communicating highly complex scientific/technical accomplishments and computer hardware and software innovations to a range of audiences.
Ability to effectively create, organize and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
Experience interacting with high-level internal and external contacts to establish working relationships needed to produce publications for release.
Strong interpersonal communication, teamwork, collaboration and client service skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of colleagues.
Proven ability to be a creative and critical thinker and problem-solver.
Demonstrated experience managing digital and print products from inception through production, including setting and meeting editorial and production schedules and strategic priorities. Proven ability to take initiative and work independently.
Additional desired qualifications:
General understanding of High Performance Computing, networking, science and/or engineering is highly desirable.
Proficient with both print and electronic publishing technologies such as web publishing software, content management systems, and digital communications practices.
Experience cultivating online communities and using social media, blogs and multimedia tools desirable.
Knowledge of Photoshop and Hootsuite.
This is a full-time, career position.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
