POSITION SUMMARY This is a professional position on the Brand and Engagement team responsible for creating and executing internal and external communications strategies to support the American Counseling Association’s mission, vision, strategic goals and objectives. The Public Affairs Director is an integral part building awareness, promoting the value of, and enhancing support for the value of counselors and counseling in society; while protecting and promoting the ACA brand. This position reports to the Brand and Engagement Leader. This position is a supervisory role. In addition to the below list of responsibilities, the Public Affairs Director will carry out assigned tasks that are consistent with the general responsibilities of the position.
RESPONSIBILITIES – Strategic Communications •In collaboration with the Brand and Engagement Leader, design and implement an internal strategic communications plan to build brand unity and cohesion. •Designs and implements strategic communications, media relations, brand awareness and promotion, and social media plans and initiatives – working across teams - for several different audience (consumers, counselors, elected officials). •Coordinates ACA’s messages among ACA affiliates to ensure clear and consistent messaging, with a focus on stakeholder understanding. •Prepares speeches, op-eds, articles and testimony for ACA leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES - Reputation Advancement •Curate, edit and project manage the digital newsletter publications in order to demonstrate ACA”s thought leadership and provide professional development (brand value) to ACA readers and members. •Collaborate with the Brand and Engagement team on the oversight and creative, strategic use of the ACA websites with focus on ACA reputation protection and promotion. •Prepares scripts (programs and video) for influence campaigns. •Oversee the ACA National Awards program with direct project management, and responsible for promotion of the awards submissions and the winners. •Collaborate with Government Relations team on content development of, and active participation in, advocacy efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES – Media Relations •Monitors, analyzes, creates and leverages media opportunities that can be utilized to build awareness of, and promote the counseling profession – encompassing all segments of the industry. •Develop and maintains key media relations inside and outside the beltway, as well as, with consumer and industry media, legislative and regulatory media, as it relates to mental health and wellness. •Develops talking points, media kits, media relations, and advisory materials for national and local events and initiatives. •Serves as ACA’s first point of contact for news media. •Prepares ACA spokespeople (CEO and President) and ACA experts for news media interviews through media training, interview prep, and media follow up.
•Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field. •8+ years of experience in public relations, public affairs, public policy, journalism or related field with a demonstrated record of success. •Superior written communication and editing skills. •Must have exceptional interpersonal skills – and be able to understand complexity and visually distill down to its essence. •Attention to detail and problem solving skills. •Excellent organizational skills. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously. •Strong proficiency with MS Office – including PowerPoint
