The University of Michigan’s Business Engagement Center is the front door to the University for corporate engagement and provides a wide variety of services to enhance the relationships between the business community and the University. These services provide an information bridge between industry, the entrepreneurial and governmental communities and ensure rapid, effective connections to people and resources at the University.
Basic Function and Responsibility
Primary interface between a set of assigned business entities and the University providing outreach support including: research partnerships, access to research centers, institutes and programs, facilitation of student hiring and internships, connections to faculty expertise, facilities and equipment, licensing of technology, professional training, advisory board opportunities, networking events and other University activities and programs which respond to corporate needs and interests.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as the University’s primary point of contact for corporate inquiries and requests from both external and internal constituents
Manage a portfolio of corporate relationships
Act as the senior business development professional to establish win/win strategic partnerships between U-M and industry
Generate both research funding and philanthropic support from your portfoio of companies
Schedule and host corporate visits to campus
Prepare grant applications, proposals, status reports and financial statements
Assist in research contract and gift agreement review and processing
Develop marketing initiatives and stewardship programs
Serve as liaison to certain University schools, colleges and institutes
Serve as liaison to certain “community” organizations (economic development, business and support organizations)
Related Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain knowledge of University faculty and research interests, capabilities and activities
Maintain knowledge of technology, research, and recruiting needs of industry
Bachelor degree required, Masters Degree preferred (preferably in business, engineering or the sciences).
Candidate should have 15 years of cumulative experience working in business development, corporate relations, or government relations with at least 5 years of this experience in industry.
Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
Ability to act effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
Flexibility to meet changing priorities.
Fluency with computer software (spreadsheet, word processing, PowerPoint).
Knowledge of the law (especially relating to intellectual property).
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
