Position Summary The Steward is responsible for scheduling, providing event support, and overseeing general maintenance in accordance to building codes for the Many Nations Longhouse.
The Steward is responsible for establishing close relationships with students, promoting activities and partnerships that encourage student retention and success, and providing a positive experience at the UO. This requires nurturing relationships with students and student groups, faculty, and staff, as well as establishing a commitment to maintaining awareness of the people, systems and structures in place to assist students. The Steward will also establish and maintain relationships with constituents and communities outside the University to ensure student success and to foster community cohesion. Primary constituents include the Native American Student Union (NASU), the Native American Law Student Association (NALSA), American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), Indigenous Women’s Wellness Group (IWWG), Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), Native American Strategies Group, Native American Studies (NAS), the Native American and Indigenous Studies Academic Residential Community (NAIS ARC), Northwest Indian Language Institute (NILI), the Sapsik'ʷałá Teacher Education Program, and the leadership representing Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes.
The Steward is required to work diplomatically and confidentially on sensitive matters with all levels of administrators, faculty, students and constituents. The Steward must demonstrate sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of educational and social development needs of all students, particularly those from historically underrepresented and/or underserved communities.
This position holds supervisory responsibility for student workers and reports directly to the Assistant Vice President and Advisor to the President for Sovereignty and Government-to-Government Relations in the Office of the President.
Minimum Requirements • Bachelor’s degree. • Three years of experience working with programs that serve Indian communities.
Professional Competencies • Extensive knowledge of cultural traditions and customs of tribal people, especially among Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes. • Proven ability to interact effectively with faculty, students, and staff throughout a university setting and with communities where services and support for Native American students, non-traditional students, and under-represented students and concerns are engaged. • Experience in researching, writing, submitting and managing grants. • Proven ability to work collaboratively to help build cohesive support for initiatives. • Ability to accept professional direction from supervisor and get requisite training in computers, UO protocols, and other professional development opportunities as appropriate. • Skill at negotiating and consensus building to support decisions and programs. • Ability to relate effectively and engage with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. • Ability to monitor and meet departmental and event deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications • Advanced degree. • Knowledge of and experience working effectively in a comprehensive research institution. • Experience in web design/site maintenance, media production, and/or public relations. • Effective experience supervising staff.
