As Ascension continues our Strategic Direction journey toward high-quality, low-cost, person-centered care for all, the rapidly evolving healthcare environment requires us to accelerate change, engage collaboratively, and work together as an integrated ministry. The President/CEO supports this endeavor through responsibility for overall market strategy and performance delivery. The Position is designed to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight with accountability for advancing Ascension Health's strategic direction, goals, and objectives in the Ministry Market.
As the key interface between Ascension Health and the Ministry Market, the President/CEO provides leadership to the ongoing refinement, measurement, and integration of annual strategic, operational, clinical, financial, and mission-related goals and objectives in a manner which ensures alignment between the Health Ministry and Ascension Health.
The President/CEO collaborates with other Ministry Market Executives and President/CEOs in the development of a System-wide environment which is conducive to collaboration and strategic alignment between all entities, takes advantage of the System's diversity and the provision of value added and responsive shared services, and promotes the widespread sharing of resources and information.
In all of the above, the President/CEO continuously seeks out opportunities for collaboration between the Ministry Market and providers, payers in the state, and other potential partners to provide high value, differentiated services to meet community needs in a sustainable fashion. The President/CEO is also responsible for opportunistically exploring and managing participation in Clinically Integrated Systems of Care.
The President/CEO directly manages the following: Medical Group Leader; Physician Lead for Sites of Care, Head of Strategy and Business Development; Nursing Lead for Sites of Care, Head of Operations and other market-specific senior leadership roles such as Advocacy and the Foundation.
There is a matrix reporting relationship with Ministry-wide Function leaders for Finance, Mission Integration, Communications, Legal and Human Resources:
Finance and Communications in-market leaders have a straight-line reporting relationship to the President/CEOs and a dotted line relationship with the Ascension Health Ministry-wide Function Lead
Mission Integration in-market leaders have a straight-line reporting relationship to the President/CEO and a dotted line relationship with the Ascension Health Ministry-wide Function Lead and the Regional Ethicist
Human Resources and Legal in-market leaders have a straight-line reporting relationship to the Ascension Health Ministry-wide Function Lead and a dotted line relationship with the President/CEO
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Determines overall market strategy, including integrated service offering and population strategy (based on community needs assessment) and degree of focus on clinically integrated systems of care
Ensures alignment across all operational and functional components in the market (e.g. sites of care, employed medical group, Ministry-wide Functions (i.e., Legal, HR, Communications, Mission Integration, and Finance) and direct subsidiaries (e.g., AIS, the Resource Group and Medxcel)
Recommends annual Integrated Strategic, Operational and Financial Plan, potential acquisition targets/terms and major capital investment priorities in accordance with System Procedures
Determines overall provider recruiting needs
As relevant, determines participation in Clinically Integrated Systems of Care
Sets accountabilities and drives performance priorities in accordance with key strategies and the broader needs of the Ministry Market. Monitors progress to plans and provides input to make adjustments as needed. Re-prioritizes in response to emerging events and aggressively drives real-time adjustments
Represents Ascension Health and the Health Ministry to external parties regarding philanthropy and advocacy/government relations (contributes to national matters as requested)
Builds relationships with local government officials, state legislators, and congressional representatives and seeks opportunities to partner with other organizations in influencing legislation. Collaborates to outline position on legislative and regulatory matters and influence legislation
In collaboration with Ascension Talent Management, identifies top and emerging talent to meet present and future talent needs. Participates in the development of emerging talent by providing stretch assignments, mentoring, and coaching
Ensures differential investment in top talent through retention strategies and succession plans. Ensures positive leadership, virtuous behaviors, and strong talent-management strategies are cascaded through the organization
Seen as a leader and advocates in philanthropic efforts. Identifies donors, nurtures relationships and takes a lead role in requests. Identifies potential, future funding sources in strategic planning
Ensures the market performance is aligned with Ascension Health's practices and standards of excellence (e.g. Mission Integration, safety/quality, contracting, operations)
Facilitates Board member selection; works collaboratively with the Board to shape strategic direction in response to community needs
Works with Home Care and Ascension Living leadership to ensure their broader strategies support the market strategy
Collaborates with the local and statewide Ascension Medical Group leaders

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required experiences include the following:
Medical Degree or Master’s Degree in Business, Finance, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Public Policy or relevant field
A minimum of ten years of progressive, senior level leadership with operations or strategic planning experience in a complex healthcare organization within the context of a larger system, with a track record of having met financial, operational and other organizational goals
The successful candidate will also have the following personal skills and attributes:
Experience in board relations, financial management, capital and operating budgets, community relations, fund raising, politics, patient care and other related areas
Demonstrated capability in leading the development of collaborative relationships with internal and external constituents in order to create value for all
