This position provides support for the Association’s state chapter affiliates and serves as the liaison to the Advisory Council of State Representatives (ACSR). In addition, the assistant director develops and implements strategies to promote integration of state chapters and their members into AACTE’s national programs and services. The assistant director also works with chapter leaders to foster stronger partnerships between the state chapter, educator preparation programs, PK-12 state organizations, state government agencies, and other partners within the state. The assistant director will support chapters with advocacy efforts at the state level on matters important to the profession, including training chapters on how to advocate. The assistant director will work with the ACSR Executive Committee to plan professional development opportunities and connect AACTE’s programmatic work to state chapter leaders to ensure that the state chapters remain a vital dimension of AACTE. The assistant director will also collaborate with the director of membership and with state chapters to support strategic membership recruitment at both the state affiliate and national levels. In addition, the assistant director will work with the assistant director of government relations on the production of resources to support the advocacy work of the state chapters and the Association.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as the liaison to ACSR and the ACSR Executive Committee, including participating in monthly planning calls and working with the Chair on logistics
Attend the ACSR Region calls and offer support, as needed, to the Region Representatives on the agenda and logistics
Work with state chapter officers and representatives to promote the purpose, objectives and goals of AACTE and the state chapters at the national and state levels
Coordinate staff participation in state chapter meetings and activities, serving as program speaker and representative, as well as connecting chapters to other AACTE staff and members
Manage activities designed to provide services to state chapters, including on the advocacy efforts of the state chapters and a network of communication and coordination between state chapters and regions.
Support the establishment or re-establishment of state chapters
Manage the State Policy Tracker and train state chapter leaders and legislative liaison, government relations committee members, or a designee from a state chapter on how to utilize the State Policy Tracker for advocacy and engagement, in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Government Relations
Implement the rollout of and training on the AACTE Action Alert system at the state level
Coordinate and oversee the State Leaders Institute, in consultation with the ACSR Executive Committee, the Assistant Director of Government Relations, and the Senior Director of Government Relations
Coordinate and oversee ACSR sessions at the AACTE Annual Meeting
Analyze the state chapter annual reports and share the results with the ACSR Executive Committee, pertinent AACTE staff, and the AACTE Board of Directors, and the membership overall
Manage the state chapter support grant program, including the reporting requirements of the program
Develop strategies in consultation with the ACSR Executive Committee to ensure state chapter maintain or transition to compliance within requirements of AACTE by- laws and the state chapter by-laws
Facilitate professional development activities for state chapters and chapter leaders
Work with the director of membership to convey the value and benefits of AACTE to state chapters and to increase AACTE membership within the chapters, as well as to support the state chapters in their own membership recruitment and retention activities
Develop, in consultation with the Assistant Director for Government Relations, the monthly newsletter State Directions
Work with the ACSR Executive Committee and state chapter leaders to promote state chapter work and awareness of state policy developments through Ed Prep Matters, a monthly newsletter, and other appropriate communication channels
In coordination with the Senior Director and Assistant Director of government relations, ensure that ACSR and the state chapters are kept abreast of state trends in legislation, as well as national trends & federal legislation.
Develop new ways for AACTE to support the state chapters, in consultation with the ACSR Executive Committee and the AACTE government relations staff
Some travel required (up to 30% of time)
Develop background and briefing materials for the Board and Executive Committee as appropriate
Compose correspondence, reports, meeting notes, records and other materials as needed to support projects and activities
Serve on staff committees and project groups as appropriate
Represent the association at meetings as requested
Other duties as assigned
There is potential to supervise interns as appropriate
Master’s degree, preferably in education or policy
Management, development and support of state affiliates of a national association, 3+ years preferred
Advocating at the state or federal level, preferably in education
Federal or state level policy development, preferably in education
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to translate complex issues into understandable, simple pieces without diluting the content or context for various audiences
Ability to work in a bipartisan way utilizing political acumen
Ability to manage multiple projects at once time
Working effectively and efficiently under pressure
Constant and consistent professionalism
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to think critically and creatively
