We are the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), an innovative professional medical association located in Darien, IL, a southwest suburb of Chicago. We’re looking for a mid-level advocacy professional to develop strategies and implement plans to advance the priorities of the AASM by influencing state and federal legislation, regulation and policy. The person in this role will manage projects, committees and advocacy initiatives, but will not have management responsibilities for direct reports.
The ideal candidate has an outgoing personality, independent motivation, persuasive verbal communication skills, strong writing abilities, strategic analysis, creative thinking, mature judgment and persistence.
What You’ll Do
Maintain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of organizational policies and priorities
Stay abreast of proposed regulatory and legislative changes that could impact the field of sleep medicine
Understand the political climate and identify the strategic relevance of key elected officials and appointees
Maintain federal status as a registered lobbyist for the organization
Develop and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive Advocacy Plan to advance the priorities of the organization
Plan regular visits to Capitol Hill for leadership and staff, coordinating meetings with the offices of elected officials and federal agency staff
Interpret complex legislative, medical and health policy information and communicate it with clarity and accuracy through a variety of written material for leadership and membership
Maintain content for the advocacy section of the organization website and oversee integration of engagement features using third-party software
Manage the AASM Political Action Committee (AASM PAC) by promoting member engagement and financial support, overseeing contributions to federal candidates, and ensuring regulatory compliance
Cultivate positive working relationships with staffers in the offices of key elected officials and trade associations, including the American Medical Association (AMA)
Work with the membership department to ensure that the organization maintains compliance with all AMA Specialty and Service Society (SSS) requirements for representation in the House of Delegates
Assist the organization’s AMA delegates in preparing for meetings of the House of Delegates and reporting back to the board of directors
Deliver presentations at AASM meetings and other events organized by allied organizations
Develop and maintain a departmental budget
Travel is required for this position, including weekends.
What We Need
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in an association, political office, government or public health agency, or consulting firm
Broad-based knowledge of health policy
Understanding of state and federal legislative and regulatory process
Strong interpersonal communication skills with an ability to collaborate with colleagues at all levels
Exceptional writing abilities
Strong analytical skills
Self-motivated, self-starter with capacity to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and meet deadlines
Strong project management skills
What we’d love
