Read by 4th is a citywide effort of an ever-growing network of partners working to dramatically increase the number of children reading on grade-level by the time they begin 4th grade. Led by the Free Library of Philadelphia, the coalition of 100+ organizations works to build school-readiness, promote quality reading instruction, increase access to summer and out-of-school-time learning, and improve daily on-time attendance. A key strategy of the campaign’s work is to build awareness of how to support children’s literacy and mobilize communities to advance the goals of the campaign.
The Read by 4th Grants Manager is a new role and will be responsible for bringing both structure and imagination to the growing sophistication of Read by 4th’s development activities. This role is both strategic and tactical, requiring the ability to think big while minding all the details. Key responsibilities of this position include: researching grant funding opportunities; writing grant proposals, budgets, and reports; monitoring the implementation of grant awards; and maintaining a strategic and detailed understanding of the Read by 4th campaign’s progress, goals, and fundraising needs. The ideal candidate will be a strong researcher and writer, eager to steep him/herself in the Read by 4th campaign. Through grant writing, reporting, and pipeline building, this person will play a critical role in supporting the Read by 4th’s financial sustainability and strategic expansion.
Support the Director of Foundation Relations and Director of Corporate Relations by managing the schedule for Read by 4th’s grant needs, including writing proposals and reports, cultivation, and stewardship activities, and planning on a 2-5 year horizon.
In close collaboration with Read by 4th’s Executive Director, Director of Foundation Relations, and Director of Corporate Relations, develop and implement a stewardship plan for existing institutional funders of the Read by 4th campaign, including communications calendar and site visit schedule, with the goal of strengthening relationships and increasing giving.
Grow institutional funding base for Read by 4th by identifying and cultivating a pipeline of new local and national prospects, and developing strategies for engagement including research of organizational connections and cross-department collaboration.
Present and discuss new grant leads at prospect review meetings.
Support the Director of Foundation Relations in matching prospects to Read by 4th’s fundraising priorities; develop grant proposals, budgets, and reports, working closely with Read by 4th and finance staff.
Support the Grants Team in developing an action plan for each new prospect, ensuring strategic alignment with overall fundraising efforts of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation.
Ensure complete and accurate Raiser’s Edge records of foundation, corporate, and government relations, including contacts, recognition requirements, grant guidelines, proposals, reports, and all other communications with grant funders, as necessary, using a “Moves Management” approach to ensure maximum engagement of each funder.
Review new grant awards and schedule required reports; oversee grant implementation requirements.
Ensure timely acknowledgement of all Read by 4th gifts.
Track revenue generation and maintain forecasting against annual and multi-year fundraising goals.
Explore strategies for diversifying Read by 4th‘s funding streams in collaboration with the Development Team.

3+ years’ experience in relevant field with demonstrated success in grant and proposal writing, including holistic knowledge of the grants process as it relates to local foundations, national foundations, corporations, and government agencies; experience in the nonprofit sector required.
Strong writing skills with the ability to demonstrate persuasive writing and articulate clear and concise thoughts.
Ability to work independently, setting priorities and ensuring deadlines are met.
Ability to work collaboratively across departments, effectively communicating what information is needed from colleagues, creating schedules for submissions, and monitoring the timely production of necessary content.
Sharp analytical skills to figure out the inputs that lead to desired outputs, figure out what’s missing, what’s redundant, and how to do it better with a strong focus on systems and process.

Understanding of local fundraising landscape and development cycle.
