As a key leader on Dean Daley's management team, the Executive Dean for Administration serves as the chief operating officer and assumes a strategic role in the overall management of Harvard Medical School (HMS). The senior administrative officer of HMS, the Executive Dean is responsible for the management and coordination of the administrative operations of the School, including all financial, facility, human resources, technology, and other business operations. The Executive Dean for Administration serves as a trusted adviser to the Dean and works closely with him to plan and manage the School's strategic initiatives and develop the short- and long-term financial and operational plans. As such, the Executive Dean has a special responsibility for ensuring the coordination of all administrative and business matters with the academic mission and programs of the School and for promoting communication across administrative and academic units. The Executive Dean also works closely with Harvard University central administration and the executive deans at Harvard's other schools, and senior administrators at the affiliated institutions.
Key Responsibilities * Ensures that the School's financial, capital and operating resources are deployed with integrity and are aligned with the mission and ambitions of the School. * Oversees the management of the School's financial resources including the development of annual and long-range operating and capital budgets; the identification of new revenue streams to fund academic programs; the identification of opportunities to optimize operational efficiencies and executing on these opportunities; and the management of relations with external funding sources. * Works collaboratively with members of the Dean's senior leadership team including the Deans for Resource Development, Academic and Clinical Affairs, Clinical and Translational Research, External Education, Graduate Education and Basic Sciences, Medical Education and the Chairs of the Basic Science and Social Science Departments. * Creates a customer service culture within the financial and operational functions of the School, ensuring the internal "customers" and external stakeholders view the services as responsive and value-added. * Manages and coordinates community and government relations, and provides leadership on cooperative ventures and new initiatives involving city, state, national, and international entities. * Manages and evaluates the School's participation in ongoing business ventures involving the affiliated institutions, the Boston and Massachusetts business communities and other Boston institutions, and initiates and takes the lead in developing new lines of business and initiatives to strengthen Boston institutions' preeminence in science and technology.
Reporting to the Executive Dean for Administration are the Associate Deans for Communications and External Affairs, Institutional Planning and Policy, and the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Information Officer, Chief Campus Planning and Facilities Officer, Chief Research Operations Officer, and the Director of the Countway Library of Medicine.

A master's degree in business, finance, higher education or related field required. Fifteen years of extensive and increasingly responsible experience working in complex and diverse management roles. A record of significant, relevant, sustained, and successful senior management experience. Strong experience in developing management strategies and effectively implementing programs and initiatives across multiple disciplines required. Experience in negotiation, conciliation and crisis management.
