The Director of Strategic Communications, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (Scripps), serves as the communications, media relations, public relations and marketing professional for the Vice Chancellor and Dean Marine Sciences – Director, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the units reporting to the Vice Chancellor. A direct report to the Executive Director for Strategic Marketing and Public Affairs for University Communications and Public Affairs (UCPA) within the Chancellor's division, the Director of Strategic Communications, Scripps is an indirect report to Vice Chancellor and Dean Marine Sciences – Director, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The Director provides the full range of communications services and advice to the Vice Chancellor and Scripps leadership. Develops communications strategies in coordination with UCPA colleagues and in sync with UCPA initiatives and Scripps needs. Works collaboratively with UCPA andScripps leadership to devise, communicate, and then implement communications strategies.
In collaboration with Scripps leadership, the Director of Strategic Communications, Scripps plans and develops proactive and comprehensive communications, media relations, public relations and marketing including best in class communications and mutuallyagreed upon marketing success measurements for the key programs and initiatives in Scripps. Serves as a public affairs advisor and places communications material in local, national and international media outlets. Works in collaboration with UCPA and Scripps colleagues in the development of promotional materials, providing content for highly polished collateral and multimedia materials that advance the international stature of UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Develops and implements communications strategies to reach institutional goals and objectives in corporate relations, government relations, community relations, donor relations, alumni relations, internalcommunications, faculty, and student recruitment. Directs the use of social media in all these objectives, as appropriate. Pitches Scripps news to strategic local, national and international media and aids in the development and implementation of strategies to address sensitive issues and keeps the campus and community informed of advances throughout Scripps.
The Director of Strategic Communications, Scripps serves in a national and international leadership capacity, leading news and public information campaigns that promote greater communication and collaboration among the nation's and world's ocean sciences research community and, by developing joint media activities and other outreach programs, increases public support of ocean science research on a global scale. Develops public relations activities to support Scripps leadership and faculty in their dealings with foreign governments, international collaborators and oceanographic institutions throughout the world
In addition to Scripps duties, the Director plays an integral role in strategic planning, coordinating and producing marketing communications efforts to maximize outreach to UC San Diego donors, prospects, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students and others, and building a stronger donor community for the campus.
As part of the UCPA team, the Director focuses on four key areas: 1) Strategic Communications, 2) Media Relations, 3) Public Relations and Marketing and 4) Multimedia, Publications and Production. Provides strategic planning and implementation of comprehensive strategic communications efforts. This includes research, writing, branding and messaging, marketing, public relations and marketing, local and national media relations, publications and website content management for various print and online newsletters. Works in collaboration on projects involving graphic design, photography, video production, printing, web development and other related functions as needed.
The Director establishes objectives and work plans, and delegates assignments to subordinate managers. Responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing resources. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Develops, modifies, and executes policies that affect immediate operations.
